On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) systems are an integral part of modern vehicles. But what's OBD, you may ask? Put simply, OBD is like a car's 'check engine' light, but with much more detail. It's the vehicle's self-diagnostic and reporting capability. This inbuilt system enables your vehicle to detect any possible issues, reducing your chances of an unexpected breakdown.
OBD comes into action when there's a problem with your vehicle that could affect its emissions output or general performance. When the vehicle's computer system, often called the Engine Control Unit (ECU), detects an issue, it triggers the OBD system, which logs the problem as a specific diagnostic trouble code (DTC). This DTC can then be read with a specialized scan tool, giving a clear idea of where the issue lies.
The beauty of OBD is in its proactive nature. Instead of waiting for a problem to get worse or potentially damaging the vehicle, the OBD system provides timely warnings.
